Safe Haven Baby Box Activated at Ennis Fire Station No. 3

A Safe Haven Baby Box at Ennis Fire Station No. 3 was recently used, and city officials say the infant is safe and receiving care.
According to the Ennis Fire Department, the department cannot release details about the infant or the circumstances of the surrender. Officials said the Safe Haven system “functioned exactly as it was designed to: safely, securely, and with the utmost care.” The baby box gives parents in crisis a safe, legal and anonymous way to surrender an infant while making sure the child receives immediate protection and medical attention. Under Texas’ Safe Haven law, also known as the Baby Moses law, a parent may legally and anonymously surrender an unharmed infant who is 60 days old or younger at a designated safe place, including a fire station, hospital, EMS station or freestanding emergency center. Ennis Fire Department thanked its firefighters for their professionalism and compassion, along with Allegiance Mobile Health for providing prompt medical care. The department also credited Safe Haven Baby Boxes for its work on infant safety and community education. The box was installed with support from Impact Communities, whose grant helped make the Ennis location possible.
