Former Police Officer Charged With Animal Cruelty After Death of K9

A former Fairfield police officer has turned himself in to the Ennis Police Department following the death of K9 Officer Farock, a German Shepherd who died after what officials previously described as a heat-related incident in Ennis.
Joseph Silas, who had served with the Fairfield Police Department for two years, turned himself in after a warrant was issued for cruelty to non-livestock animals under Texas Penal Code 42.092(b)(1), a third-degree felony. Silas was booked into the Ennis City Jail and arraigned. He has since posted bond and been released. The case follows the June 12 death of K9 Officer Farock. Fairfield police previously said the incident happened in Ennis and that the Ennis Police Department was investigating the circumstances surrounding the dog’s death. Fairfield PD also said Silas was terminated on June 18 following an Internal Affairs investigation. *The charge listed in the warrant is an allegation, and Silas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.*
