For many elected officials, the proposal amounts to roughly a 3% salary increase. County commissioners would rise from $120,187 to $123,793, while the county clerk, district clerk, tax assessor-collector and treasurer would each move from $112,579 to $115,956. Some increases are notably larger. The sheriff’s salary would increase by $22,064, from $167,265 to $189,329. Constables would also receive larger raises, with proposed salaries ranging from $102,738 to $104,358 (current range is from $95,820 to $97,440). Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 would rise from $102,352 to $111,423. The county says that includes a new $6,000 annual stipend for serving as the primary after-hours magistrate for evidentiary search warrants, including blood-draw warrants. Vehicle allowances would also increase for several officials. The county judge and all four justices of the peace would see their annual auto allowances rise from $10,000 to $13,000. One apparent pay cut is not actually a salary reduction. County Court at Law No. 2 is listed at $210,375, down from $244,500, because a new judge will take office in January at a lower statutory salary. The proposed amount blends the two salary rates across the fiscal year. Overall, Ellis County is proposing $67,350 more in elected-official salaries, plus increases in conference and vehicle allowances. The Commissioners Court is scheduled to consider the changes at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Historic Ellis County Courthouse in Waxahachie.
