Young Child Dies After Another Child Accesses Gun in Ferris

Ferris DPS is investigating a tragic shooting that left a young child dead today in the Shaw Creek area near Tidwell.
According to Ferris officials, preliminary information indicates that a very young child gained access to a firearm inside a residence. Another young child was struck by gunfire and died from their injuries. Officials said the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no known ongoing threat to the community. An adult male who left the scene after the shooting has since been located and taken into custody. The investigation is being conducted by Ferris DPS with assistance from the Texas Rangers, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ellis County District Attorney’s Office. Criminal charges are being pursued in connection with the firearm, how it was accessible to a child, and actions taken after the incident, according to Ferris DPS.
