Ellis County Deputy-Involved Shooting in Red Oak Leaves Man Dead

A man died Wednesday after an Ellis County Sheriff’s Office deputy-involved shooting in Red Oak.
Deputies were called around 3:36 p.m. May 6 to the 100 block of Carol Lane for a disturbance. The sheriff’s office said initial reports included a witness hearing what sounded like yelling and a gunshot from a nearby home. A separate caller also reported an adult man was threatening self-harm. When deputies arrived, one deputy encountered the man armed with a firearm, according to the release. The sheriff’s office said the deputy gave multiple commands for the man to drop the weapon, but the man refused and pointed the firearm at the deputy. The deputy then fired his weapon. Deputies immediately began providing medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. The man was taken to a Dallas-area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Sheriff Norman said he has requested the Texas Rangers take the lead in the investigation, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. “This investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information will be released at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.
