Inmate Dies After Apparent Self-Inflicted Injury at Ellis County Jail
An inmate at the Wayne McCollum Detention Center died Tuesday morning after what officials say was a self-inflicted injury.
According to a statement from Sheriff Brad Norman, detention staff found 42-year-old Vince Lee Espino of Ennis unconscious in the early hours of Nov. 11. Staff provided medical aid until emergency responders arrived. Espino was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Waxahachie, where he was later pronounced dead.
Espino had been arrested in October by the Ennis Police Department on narcotics-related charges and booked into the Ellis County Jail.
As is standard procedure, Sheriff Norman said the Texas Rangers have been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the incident. No additional details are being released while that investigation is ongoing.
“Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Espino, and we remain committed to full cooperation with the investigative process,” Norman said in the release.
