Ellis County Jail Medical Care at Risk After Vendor Bankruptcy
Ellis County leaders have called an emergency meeting Friday after the county’s contracted inmate medical services provider unexpectedly filed for bankruptcy, creating an urgent need to keep health care services running inside the county jail.
The Ellis County Commissioners Court will meet Friday, May 15, 2026, at 3 p.m.. According to the posted agenda, commissioners will discuss and possibly take action on “stop-gap professional service agreements or other similar provisions” to provide inmate medical care on an interim basis.
The agenda also notes that the court may discuss legal matters connected to the county’s inmate medical contract with YesCare in executive session.
A sudden disruption in the vendor contract could affect basic services like medication, emergency care, chronic illness treatment, mental health support, and other daily health needs for inmates.
County officials described the situation as an emergency affecting county operations and said immediate action is needed to ensure continuity of care and services within the jail.
YesCare’s financial troubles appear to have escalated after a $307.5 million court judgment tied to medical care claims. The company also later lost a major Alabama prison health care contract worth about $1 billion, one of its largest contracts.
