Girl Lost Eye — Mother Sentenced to 18 Years
A Glenn Heights woman was sentenced to 18 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of injuring her 9-year-old daughter, according to the Ellis County and District Attorney’s Office.
The trial for 41-year-old Rashieta Uasia Brooks began November 17. Prosecutors told jurors that in May 2024, Brooks repeatedly whipped her daughter with an extension cord, causing a severe injury to the child’s eye. Instead of seeking medical care, Brooks kept the girl home from school to avoid Child Protective Services, officials said.
The injury was eventually discovered by the child’s aunt, who reported it to CPS. Doctors at Children’s Hospital in Dallas attempted to save the girl’s eye, but it had to be removed.
The child, now 10, testified during the trial. She told jurors about years of abuse, including being beaten, forced to take scalding baths, and sometimes denied access to the restroom.
Lead prosecutor Chris Abel called the girl “perhaps the strongest, kindest, and most resilient person I have ever met,” praising her courage and compassion despite the trauma she endured.
The jury returned a guilty verdict on Friday, November 21. Sentencing took place later that night in the 443rd District Court with Judge Grace Pandithurai presiding.
Brooks has filed notice that she intends to appeal. She remains in the Ellis County Jail while awaiting transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Her parental rights have been terminated, and officials say the child is now living safely with her aunt.
