Waxahachie Juneteenth Events Set for Saturday
Waxahachie will celebrate Juneteenth on Saturday, June 20, with a parade, community picnic and local history opportunities centered around Lee Penn Park and the Ellis County African American Hall of Fame Museum & Library.
According to Waxahachie Parks & Recreation, the Waxahachie and Ellis County Branch of the NAACP (The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) will host its Juneteenth Celebration at Lee Penn Park, located at 402 N. Getzendaner St.
The day begins with the Juneteenth Parade at 11 a.m. Lineup starts at 10 a.m., and all are welcome to participate.
The parade route will begin at Lee Penn Park, then travel along Peters Street, Wyatt Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Rogers Street, Jefferson Street and Getzendaner Street before returning to Lee Penn Park.
A community picnic will follow from noon to 3 p.m. at the park. The celebration is expected to include free food, face painting, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, community vendors and other family-friendly activities.
Waxahachie Parks & Recreation said the event honors the spirit of Juneteenth by bringing residents together to celebrate freedom, history and unity.
Residents can also visit the Ellis County African American Hall of Fame Museum & Library on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum highlights stories and contributions of African Americans with ties to Waxahachie.
